All those who serve as leaders in the Church should set an example to their brothers and sisters in Christ through regular and faithful attendance at worship services, take the Lord’s Supper on a regular basis, faithfully attend Bible class, and participate in various fellowship activities.
The unique responsibilities of this Board include the development of programs to teach good stewardship attitudes in the congregation in regard to time, talent, and treasures. The Board should work to try to ensure the financial stability of the congregation and to provide for the work of Christ’s Kingdom through a program of dedicated, first-fruit giving.
Duties to fulfill these responsibilities can include:
- Finding and providing programs, seminars, or workshops to teach and promote stewardship.
- Annually providing the opportunity for Time and Talent questionnaires. Maintaining the questionnaire, entering the information on the Church’s software to keep a summary of members’ interests. Providing follow-up on interests and talents to try to get every member involved in some aspect of Christian growth and service.
- Assisting the treasurer and financial secretary as appropriate.
- Assisting in orientation and assimilation of new members.
- Assisting the nominating committee.
- Assisting and co-ordinating activities with the fellowship committee.
- Screening outside appeals for funds, making appropriate recommendations to Council or Voters’ Assembly.
- Being aware of the needs of the Congregation.
- Overseeing the production of the congregation’s pictorial directory.
- Being responsible for timely articles in the newsletter to keep the congregation informed about the Stewardship program.
- Keeping appropriate Stewardship information on the Church’s website.
The following two definitions of Stewardship are taken from the LCMS Biblical Stewardship Principles adopted at the 1998 Synodical Convention:
- Christian stewardship is the free and joyous activity of the child of God and God’s family the church,
in managing all of life and life’s resources for God’s purposes.
- Maturing stewards do the right things for the right reasons and strive for excellence in all they do!
